Nudge your mind, book review of “Nudge: Improving Decisions About Health, Wealth, and Happiness”

Have you ever tried to set a new year resolution such as weight-losing but giving up in the end? Such things usually happen!

For example, on Saturday morning, people might say they prefer exercising to watching TV, but once the afternoon comes, they are on the couch watching Netflix. How can such behavior be understood?

The author of “Nudge”, Nobel behavioral economy award, introduced two factors, temptation and mindlessness choosing, to explain this phenomenon.

The term “temptation” is easier to recognize than to define. We call something tempting if we consume more of it. Mindlessness choosing can be explained in many situations when people put themselves into an “auto-pilot” mode, in which they are not actively paying attention to the task at hand.

We usually think we can decide for ourselves. In fact, many effects around us influence our behavior, and we even don’t know about them. That’s why most people will use some self-controlled strategies to overcome this kind of issues.

By reading “Nudge”, we could understand these effects and use what the writer called “nudge”, a small and subtle pushes, to make decisions between real-world choices and then improve our life.

While some of the anecdotes are funny, many of the writer’s proposals contain the America social and economic issues that will take a while to comprehend for a reader of a non-American.

Until you are fascinated by these scenarios the author is addressing, I would suggest others read related books that explore in a much more engaging way.

The note of Story: Style, Structure, Substance, and the Principles of Screenwriting Chapter 1

Story is about archetypes, not stereotypes.

Two typical and persistent kinds of failed screenplay.

  1. “personal story” bad script(The writer see what is visible factual, he is blind to the truth of life)
  2. The “guaranteed commercial success,” is an over-structured, overcomplicated, overpopulated assault on the physical senses that bear no relationship to life whatsoever.

Story is metaphor for life.

Sensory and imaginative are powers prerequisite to creativity.
Writing also demand two singular and essential talents.

  1. The first is literary talent– the conversion of ordinary language into a higher, more expressive form, vividly describing the world and capturing its human voices.Literary talent is, however, common.
  2. The second is story talent– the creative conversion of life itself to a more powerful, clearer, more meaningful experience.

The material of literary talent is words; the material of story talent is life itself.

Story talent is primary, literary talent secondary but essential. Only by using everything and anything you know about the craft of storytelling can make your talent forge story.

Booknotes of Thinkertoys( false faces)

Creativity is not a privilege that somebody has. Everyone could be creative if he believes he was born this way and he could execute it. Thinkertoys introduces concepts and techniques that could improve your creative skills. The author divides these techniques into two parts, linear and intuitive.

Linear ones contain three groups. Group A reorganizes different information by listing, dividing and combining it to give you new entry points for solving problems. In this article, we introduce the “false faces” technique.

Method:

  1. write down your challenge
  2. list your assumptions
  3. reverse your assumptions
  4. try to solve it under this reverse assumption

Implementation:

For example

  1. my challenge: increase your organic reach and interactive rate for your Facebook Page
  2. my assumption:
  • organic reach decreases after the changing policy of facebook algorithm. Some corps start to focus on other social platforms.
  • too many advertisements
  • visitors comes by only for buying products
  • too many competitors on Facebook Page

3.reverse your assumptions

  • organic reach decreases after the changing policy of facebook algorithm. Some corps don’t focus on other social platforms
  • fewer advertisements
  • visitors come by not only for buying products
  • no competitor on Facebook Page

4. try to solve it under this reverse assumption

  • Maybe we should remain on the original platform due to fewer competitors.
  • We should generate content that matters to customers’ life.

“false faces” technique is an easy way to implement. And it could change our mindsets to propose different ideas.
